Norway's Zero team crosses Europe in hydrogen cars without a backup

Norway's Zero team crosses Europe in hydrogen cars without a backup

It's not quite a trip around the world, but a trek that Norway's Zero team recently undertook in a pair of hydrogen-fueled cars is certainly an impressive enough feat in its own right. Late last month, they drove two Hyundai Ix35 FCEVs from Oslo to Monte Carlo (admittedly one of the easier ways to technically "cross Europe"), relying solely on the existing hydrogen refueling infrastructure -- that's as opposed to other trips that brought along fuel trucks as backup. As the team explains, the key to the trip was some careful planning at the outset, but they apparently still wound up cutting it close a few times, and were forced to put their hypermiling skills to the test. Not surprisingly, they found that the hydrogen infrastructure still needs to be considerably improved for such trips to become commonplace, but they seem hopeful that things could soon improve.

(AP) ? Stress, family medical history or possibly even poison led to the death of Vladimir Lenin, contradicting a popular theory that a sexually transmitted disease debilitated the former Soviet Union leader, a UCLA neurologist said Friday.

Dr. Harry Vinters and Russian historian Lev Lurie reviewed Lenin's records Friday for an annual University of Maryland School of Medicine conference that examines the death of famous figures.

The conference is held yearly at the school, where researchers in the past have re-examined the diagnoses of figures including King Tut, Christopher Columbus, Simon Bolivar and Abraham Lincoln.

The 53-year-old Soviet leader suffered several strokes before dying in 1924 and what caused them isn't clear.

An autopsy found blood vessels in his brain were extremely hardened, results that have been difficult to understand, said Dr. Philip Mackowiak, who organizes the yearly event.

"Number one, he's so young and number two, he has none of the important risk factors," Mackowiak said.

Lenin didn't smoke ? he never let smokers near him. He also didn't have diabetes, wasn't overweight and the autopsy didn't find any evidence of high blood pressure, said Mackowiak, director of the medical care clinical center of the VA Maryland Health Care System, a co-sponsor of the event.

There was "considerable suspicion" among Russians at the time of Lenin's death that syphilis was to blame, Mackowiak said.

However, family history appears to have worked more against Lenin, Vinters said.

Lenin was treated for syphilis using the primitive medications available at the time, and while the sexually transmitted disease can cause strokes, there is no evidence from his symptoms or the autopsy that was the case with Lenin, Vinters said.

The Soviet leader's father died at 54 and both may have been predisposed to hardening of the arteries. Stress also is a risk factor for strokes, and there's no question the communist revolutionary was under plenty of that, the neurologist said.

"People were always trying to assassinate him, for example." Vinters said.

Lurie, a St. Petersburg-based expert in Russian history and politics who also spoke at the conference, said that while Lenin had several strokes, he believes Josef Stalin may finished him off with poison, a theory that Vinters said is a possibility.

Lenin's health had been growing worse over time. In 1921, he forgot the words of a major speech and he had to learn to speak again and write with his left hand after one stroke. A major stroke later left him paralyzed on one side and unable to speak.

However, Lurie said Lenin had recovered enough in early 1924 that he celebrated the new year and went hunting. Lenin, who supported Stalin's rise to power, may have realized he made a mistake and began aligning himself with Leon Trotsky, which caused Stalin to poison Lenin, the historian said.

Poisoning, in fact, eventually became one of Stalin's favorite methods of disposing of enemies, Lurie said.

"The funny thing is that the brain of Lenin still is preserved in Moscow, so we can investigate," Lurie said.

Lenin's embalmed body also still lies on public display in a Red Square mausoleum almost 20 years after the collapse of the communist state he helped bring to life.

Vinters, who reviewed autopsy records and the leader's clinical history, said toxicology tests that might have revealed poisoning were not conducted during the autopsy. Reports from the time also show Lenin was active and talking a few hours before his death.

"And then he experienced a series of really, really bad convulsions which is quite unusual for someone who has a stroke," Vinters said.

Microsoft ditches Windows Live brand, explains new approach to cloud services

Image

Confused by Microsoft's array of internet/cloud-based services for Windows and Windows Phone? Then it looks like the company's been listening to you. In his latest blog post for the Building Windows 8 blog, Microsoft's Steven Sinofksy explains the company's new approach to cloud services in Windows 8 and Windows Phone, and confirms one big change: it's doing away with the Windows Live brand entirely. Replacing it is something simply called the Microsoft account, which you can use to both sign in to Microsoft's own services and tie to other third-party services like Twitter or Facebook. That one account can also be used to sign in on various devices and immediately have access to Microsoft's various services, which are now all definitely called "apps," and are also taking on a more unified approach across both Windows 8 and Windows Phone (as you can see in the chart above). In addition to the former Windows Live branded services, that includes the longstanding MSN Messenger, which will now simply be known as "Messaging." As usual, Sinofksy's described all those changes at some length -- hit the source link below for his full post.

George Zimmerman MySpace Page Reveals Legal Problems, Possible Racism

An old, long-unused MySpace page belonging to George Zimmerman contains apparently racist comments and casts light on his history of legal problems.

Zimmerman, who faces second-degree murder charges for killing Trayvon Martin, makes disparaging comments about Mexicans on the 2005-dated page.

He also referred triumphantly to his escape from legal troubles stemming from his confrontation with law enforcement officers, among other matters.

The page, which was confirmed as authentic Wednesday by Zimmerman’s attorney Mark O’Mara, also mentions a 7-year-old domestic violence incident.

George Zimmerman MySpace Photo

Zimmerman, 28, gained national notoriety when he shot and killed Martin, 17, in Sanford, Florida, on February 26. He was not charged at the time.

The case has sparked racial tensions around the U.S., as Martin, who was unarmed, was black. Zimmerman has a white father and Hispanic mother.

Martin’s family and supporters claim he was a victim of racial profiling, while the former neighborhood watch volunteer claims he acted in self-defense.

On the old MySpace page, called “onlytobeakingagain,” Zimmerman uses the name “Joe G” and discusses leaving his hometown of Manassas, Va.

He muses on how much he misses his friends, then vveers into a slang-filled rant, with many words misspelled, about Mexicans who lived in the area.

Zimmerman writes:

“I don’t miss driving around scared to hit mexicans walkin on the street, soft (expletive) wanna be thugs messin with peoples cars when they aint around (what are you provin, that you can dent a car when no ones watchin) don’t make you a man in my book.”

“Workin 96 hours to get a decent pay check, gettin knifes pulled on you by every mexican you run into!” he adds, providing no details about these incidents.

This, of course, has little, if anything, to do with the facts of the Martin case, but it does offer an interesting window into the mind of the defendant.

Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump said Wednesday that be believes prosecutors could use Zimmerman’s MySpace comments against him.

“It’s not just speculation and innuendo. He has a history and a habit of profiling people,” he said. “He thinks certain things about certain racial groups.”

George Zimmerman Free on Bail

A statement posted on a Zimmerman defense site run by O’Mara concedes that the comments “will cast Mr. Zimmerman in a less-than-favorable light."

O'Mara even concedes it could be used as evidence in the case. His statement says there will be no comment on the MySpace statements for that reason.

The second post mentions a legal battle with an “ex-hoe,” likely a reference to a 2005 incident in which a girlfriend accused Zimmerman of attacking her.

He was not charged in that case, and on the blog post, Zimmerman writes that the woman “tried her hardest, but the judge saw through it!”

Zimmerman’s wife testified at his bail hearing in April. during which he apologized to Trayvon Martin's family, that her husband told her he was actually defending himself in that incident, not the other way around.

A recent photo of Zimmerman's bloody head may bolster his claim that he acted in self-defense during the Martin incident, which he maintains.

Samsung Series 7 Gamer laptop goes on sale in the US for $1,900

Who could forget that marigold yellow gaming laptop sitting around Samsung's booth at CES? Though the Series 7 Gamer has been available in Europe since last fall, the company decided to wait until Intel made its big Ivy Bridge reveal to introduce its first gaming laptop here in the states. Now that those chips are starting to ship, the Series 7 Gamer is at last on sale here in the US, available in a single configuration that'll set you back $1,900. (Sorry, folks, it will only be sold in black.) Though that price is slightly higher than the estimate we heard four months ago, the specs are also beefier than we were expecting. For the money, you'll get an unspecified Ivy Bridge Core i7 CPU, 16GB of RAM, an NVIDIA GTX675M GPU, a 1.5TB 7,200RPM hard drive and a 400-nit, 17.3-inch, 1080p display. Like that other Series 7 laptop we reviewed recently, that HDD is paired with 8GB of flash memory to help cut start-up and application launch times. At its best, the battery is rated to last 3.7 hours -- not bad for a 13.34-pound system -- and you can exert some control over the runtime by selecting from one of four power modes using an analog dial. All the major e-tailers like Amazon and NewEgg will carry it, and feel free to revisit our hands-on from CES if you need a few close-up shots to jog your memory.

'Harry Potter' At The MTV Movie Awards: Experts Weigh In

'I'm a little nervous for 'Harry Potter,' ' says one analyst, noting that 'Deathly Hallows, Part 2' is up against 'Hunger Games' and latest 'Twilight.'

Eight films. Seven books. And now, at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards, the magic number is six for "Harry Potter" fans: That's the amount of nominations earned by the final film in the epic fantasy series, "Deathly Hallows, Part 2." As the grand "Potter" finale, "Deathly Hallows" represents the last opportunity for wizards and witches alike to band together and win the elusive Movie of the Year award, among other statuettes — but the battle won't be easy for fans, according to the experts.

"I'm a little nervous for 'Harry Potter' [at the Movie Awards]," Hypable.com's Andrew Sims told MTV News about the nominations. "This is the only year that 'The Hunger Games,' 'Twilight' and 'Harry Potter' are all competing, in some cases head-to-head."

Indeed, those three massive franchises are going up against each other — all three are nominated for Movie of the Year and Best Kiss — though many believe the real showdown will be between "Hunger Games" and "Potter," particularly in the Best Female Performance race. That category includes both Jennifer Lawrence as girl-on-fire Katniss Everdeen and Emma Watson as brilliant witch Hermione Granger, and it's bound to be an epic showdown.

"It's going to be tough because Katniss is such a strong female lead, and people are obsessed with her strength and her character," said Julia Hodges of DanRadcliffe.com and RupertGrint.net. "But we have a history with Hermione. Maybe people will really acknowledge her for all of the amazing work."

Daniel Radcliffe's footing in the Best Male Performance race is a bit more certain according to "Potter" fans who refuse to believe the Boy Who Lived won't be rewarded for eight excellent movies.

"I think Daniel Radcliffe has this one locked up. When you look at that list, they're all fabulous," said LeakyNews.com's Melissa Anelli of Radcliffe's competition, which includes "Hunger Games" star Josh Hutcherson. "I especially love ['Drive' star] — I think he does fantastic work there. But I do think it's a clear win for Radcliffe."

"His acting in these 'Harry Potter' films just got better and better over time," Sims agreed. "And of course in this final film, where Harry has to sacrifice himself, it was such a huge moment in the series, and every fan connected with Harry in that moment."

Even if Radcliffe and Watson don't pull out individual wins, the "Potter" experts we spoke with said they'd be stunned if "Deathly Hallows" doesn't take home the Best Cast award.

"This is definitely the award I feel most confident about for 'Potter,' " Hodges said. "We have not only Harry, Ron and Hermione — Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson — but also Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith and all of these lead stars who really bring together the entire cast. It's more than just the trio. It's the entire whole."

"When I look at this list, I think 'Harry Potter' really does have this one," Anelli added. "The cast is so large and layered and talented. It was like the end of a symphony with this film."

But even as it approaches its last shot at Golden Popcorn glory, "Potter" can't count on nostalgia alone, especially when "there's a new 'Twilight' film and a new 'Hunger Games' film on the horizon, whereas there are [no more movies] for 'Harry Potter,' " Sims said.

"I think it still has a good shot because it's huge and always will be," he added. "But there are other fandoms knocking — very vibrant fandoms, who are definitely going to give it some tough competition."

Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET.

BlackBerry Music Gateway streams audio over Bluetooth, pairs with NFC for RIM-made remote control

Image

It's not the QNX-based smartphone you've all been waiting for, but it should give crackberry devotees something to bop along to. Outed just one day before the company's showcase officially kicks off in Orlando, Waterloo's trotting out its BlackBerry Music Gateway: a car / home stereo accessory that pairs with your BB handset or PlayBook tablet to wirelessly stream audio over Bluetooth with an NFC assist. The $50 peripheral, set for a June release, is meant to turn your RIM-built device into an easy-to-use remote at a distance of up to 30 feet. For that convenient near field communication control, however, you'll need to be packing one of the company's NFC-enabled phones, like the Bold 9790 or Curve 9360/ 9380. Splashiest news to come out of BlackBerry World 2012? We sure hope not. Consider this the trickle before the eventual PR deluge.
