Syndicate Gets Reboot, Dubsteppy
When it was announced that XCOM would be revisited as a first person shooter, fans of the old-school isometric view strategy RPG were apoplectic. Those same fans are probably going to go into conniptions watching this trailer for the revisitation of Syndicate, another classic isometric SRPG now dressed up as a next-gen shooter. However, if you don?t care one iota about SRPGs from the halcyon days of PC gaming, this will probably look pretty cool, especially with the concepts of computer chip enhanced mind control play mechanics that are introduced here. It?s by the guys who brought us those pretty great Chronicles of Riddick shooters, as well as the first game in The Darkness series, so it should be pretty good. I guess it?s a rule now, though, that every game trailer must use some for of dubstep for its music.
New Zelda Trailer Brings The Romance
How?s this for a first in the Legend of Zelda series? While fans have always speculated as to the romantic involvement between series hero Link and the titular Zelda, any sort of actual romance has never really played a part in any of the games. Until now, that is. As this new trailer for the upcoming Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword indicates, Link finds himself romantically pursued by a girl who may or may not be Zelda (oh who are we kidding, of course it?s Zelda). While Nintendo insists on keeping Link mute (that oughta put a strain on the relationship), this is the first time in the series history that the developers have truly sought to develop Link?s character in a significant way. Should be interesting to see how that aspect of Skyward Sword pans out.
Mortal Kombat Web Series Leads To New Movie
Remember that super bloody and violent test reel (dubbed Mortal Kombat Rebirth) that led to the web series Mortal Kombat Legacy? Well, it turns out that the success of both of those has led to the director, Kevin Tancharoen, to getting the green light from New Line to make an all-new theatrical Mortal Kombat film. This might be an industry first, where a web series has led straight to Hollywood opportunity. Regardless, if nothing else this further speaks to the sustained popularity of the MK brand, as the web series got millions of hits and the recently rebooted video game (link here to review) sold 3 million units. It?s a good time to be an MK fan.

Skullgirls Trailer Is Anything But Dainty
One indie game that continues to impress is Skullgirls. It?s a classically styled 2D fighting game that looks to play in a similar over-the-top fashion to the Marvel Vs. Capcom and Guilty Gear games. What?s impressive, though, (aside from the fantastic artwork/animation and solid fighting mechanics) is that this was all done by a tiny independent studio. This further proves that indie studios are going to be the creative lifeblood of this industry, putting out delightfully offbeat projects such as this, ones that most major publishers would never go near. This latest trailer features the fighter Parasoul. Check it out.
Shank 2 Announced, Has New Co-Op
Speaking of indie developers putting out awesome 2D animated action fests, the folks over at Klei are giving us another taste of Shank. The original made a solid splash on PSN and XBLA last year when it delivered a tight action game that looked like a cross between the gameplay of Devil May Cry and its multi-weapon action insanity and the aesthetic of an animated Robert Rodiriguez movie. Klei is giving us more of that, but apparently with an all-new co-op mode that seems to be inspired by the Firefight and Beast modes of recent Halo and Gears of War games, respectively.
