2011 Fantasy football Week 3 running back report

Some big names get some juicy matchups this week which is always fun to see if they can take advantage. There are also some not so juicy matchups as well. We?ll take a look at both. Don?t worry.

Don?t Be Afraid

Maurice Jones-Drew: With Blaine ?Sunshine? Gabbert making his first NFL start you can rest assured that Jones-Drew will see plenty of looks. The Panthers are allowing a healthy 5.7 yards per carry and will be tested early and often by MJD. And even if Cam can get the Panthers a good lead, Jones-Drew will see his share of passing targets from the rookie.

Rashard Mendenhall: Mendy hasn?t had much room to roam these first two games. The Ravens are giving up 3 yards a carry and the Seahawks just 3.4. The Colts are giving up 130 yards and 2 touchdowns a game on the ground and that?s with them knowing the run is coming. The Steelers should get the lead in this one and let Mendenhall salt it away.

Chris Johnson: This is the game CJ2K owners have been waiting for. The Broncos have been consistently poor in rush defense and have kept up that recent tradition this season. They are giving up 130 yards per game at 5.2 yards a carry and Chris Johnson is champing at the bit (yes, that?s the correct term, look it up) to break out. Add to that the Broncos without Champ Bailey and the Titans should be able to loosen the defense up even more.

Ray Rice: St. Louis has been one of the easier defenses to run on this season. Football Outsiders has them as the second to last rush defense in their DVOA rankings (don?t ask me, they?re nerds). Plus they are giving up 4.8 yards per carry, 1 touchdown, and 124 yards per game.? He?s my #1 running back this week.

Ryan Mathews: In week 1 Mike Tolbert was on the field 12 more plays than Ryan Mathews and then in week 2 they were on the field the exact same number of plays. That is in direct correlation with each players productivity on the ground. Mathews is averaging 4.5 yards per carry versus Tolbert?ssad 2.1 yards per carry. As long as Mathews can stay healthy his touches should continue to rise. And this week the Chargers get the deteriorating Kansas City Chief?s defense at home. The Chiefs have given up 121 rushing yards a game and 1.5 touchdowns. Not sure how you give up half a touchdown, but the Chiefs found a way.

Jahvid Best: Detroit?s offense is crazy good right now and Minnesota is crazy bluh. They have given up 20 receptions to running backs already and that?s what Best is, uh, best at. They are giving up 4.2 yards a carry as well, which is also not that good.

Shonn Greene: This guy is just playing as rotten as someone can play, but he?s still clinging on to the #1 running back spot. And thankfully he gets a nice matchup against the Raiders who are giving up 6.6 yards per carry, which leads the league in crappiness. If you have him you have to start him here and hope upon hope that he does some damage and then trade him to the nearest Jets homer.

Be Afraid!

Cedric Benson: The 49ers are putting the beat down on opposing running backs so far this season and lead in every single category I could find/make up. Cedric Benson averaged 3.5 yards per carry last season and so far this season he?s at 4.4 yards per carry based on a pretty easy rush defense schedule. He will come back down to earth hard this week.

Beanie Wells: He?s put together two nice games and looks like he?s the real deal, but he does get a tough matchup. Seattle is awful at almost everything they do, but they have been tough against the run. They?re only allowing 3.4 yards a carry and that was against Frank Gore and Rashard Mendenhall. It?s hard to sit Wells, but if you have a similar back to switch him with I?d consider it.

Steven Jackson: Baltimore has shut down Rashard Mendenhall and Chris Johnson and now have their sights on SJax. He is questionable right now, but if he does go don?t expect the world from him. The Ravens are giving up 3 yards a carry and have a weakness in their pass defense. That?s where the Rams will try to make their hay.
