Alastair McCall, editor of the guide said: ?Leicester university has had a remarkable year ? the highlight being when its archaeologists discovered Richard III buried under a car park in the city.

?Archaeology is one of a number subjects in which the institution excels. It is in or just outside the top ten nationally for staffing levels and spending on facilities as well as producing consistently high scores in the National Student Survey.?

He added: ?Loughborough?s strengths extended way beyond the sporting excellence for which it was originally so well known.

?The university consistently registers among the best scores in the National Student Survey.

?Taken as a whole, its sports facilities are arguably the best in any university outside of the United States.?

Professor Sir Robert Burgess, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leicester said:

?It is a terrific accolade to be selected as one of the foremost universities in Britain in the first ever joint Times/Sunday Times University Guide.

?To be selected as runner-up for the title of University of the Year out of over 120 institutions is excellent.

?This has been a year of remarkable successes for the university ? during the year the university achieved global attention for the discovery and identification of King Richard III and, in our Department of Physics and Astronomy, our researchers have been involved with the NASA Mars rover Curiosity mission.

?This accolade is a fitting tribute to the hard work and dedication of all of our staff, students, sponsors and supporters.?

A spokeswoman for Loughborough University said:

?Loughborough remains one of the top ranked universities in the country, despite the usual annual and minor fluctuations in rankings. Our combination of world-class research, cutting-edge innovation and unparalleled sporting achievement ensure that we have a distinct offering that attracts the very best students from the UK and overseas."

A spokesman for De Montfort University (DMU)said: ?This is a new league table and we are undertaking some further analysis to allow us to fully understand the results. Some of the data are 18 months old and we have made significant improvements since, so we were disappointed that our overall position does not seem to reflect the excellent progress that has been made at DMU in recent years. As this year's admissions figures show, DMU continues to enjoy record demand for places and the quality of the students we are attracting is improving year on year.

?DMU is entering its most exciting era yet, as evidenced by our ?90 million investment in our campus and yesterday's announcement of the ground-breaking #DMUglobal scheme to offer 11,000 of our students an international experience during their degree. We are confident that the benefits of these projects ? and others that are underway too - will filter through to future league tables, which will show why DMU is becoming known worldwide as a leader in creativity and innovation with a strong focus on providing the best in student experience and graduate employability.?
