Peanut allergy nearly costs two year old her life four times; family seeking help from community

SALISBURY - It's an unusual malady, but one that has the potential to be deadly. ?In recent years there have been stories in the news about the dangers of peanut allergies. ?Just a couple of years ago a teenager died after accidentally ingesting enough of what was for her peanut contamination at a restaurant in a Concord mall.

There are steps that can be taken to protect children with such an allergy, but they can be very expensive. ?In Salisbury one family is reaching out to the community for help.?Here is the story of Emmalee Boehm, told be her mother, Mandi Leeann Boehm:?Just after Emmalees first birthday in 2011, she was diagnosed with a severe peanut allergy. A piece of a peanut butter girl scout cookie nearly cost her, her life.??

This past May, Emmalee two years old had another reaction. This time she came into contact with peanut residue left on a table from a previous customer in one of our favorite family restaurants. The residue on the table broke her out in hives, facial swelling and a 106 fever for nearly 5 days. Multiple shots and hospital visits were necessary to help her. This was on her list of "safe restaurants." This peanut free facility was contaminated by a third party who innocently brought in a peanut containing product. While this establishment remains on our safe list, the reality of cross contamination has been mind blowing.

Again, just this past week at Zmax Dragway, while watching her Grandfather race she came in contact with peanuts. Within minutes from the exposure she was struggling to breathe. This adventure resulted in two days in the pediatric unit of our local hospital. Having yet another relapse in their care once we got there. By far the scariest, most helpless situation I have ever been in as a parent. Watching someone so small unable to breathe and knowing there is one thing that CAN help her but that in some cases simply doesn't work, is heartbreaking. Thankfully, it worked this time. But with such a small contact, it is frightening to think about how bad the next exposure will be and if the epi-pen will be enough.??At just two years old Emmalee has faced a life and death situation 4 times.... FOUR times we could have lost our precious baby girl.??While the cost of a service dog overwhelms me, in the grand scheme of things we can not put a price on our little girls life. At this point grocery stores, sporting events, birthday parties, trips, school, baby sitters, play dates, circuses, zoos, amusement parks etc all share the risk of taking her life. Please help us, help our daughter live a more fulfilling life. She has this amazing big, wide open personality yet we now need to restrict her from so much. She doesn't have an obvious disease, she looks healthy and loves her little life. But there is a threat lurking in some of the most common places that can instantly change our world.??$20,000 seems incredibly overwhelming to us... likewise for anyone reading our story... but $5, $10, $20 that is more bearable and together, little by little my hope is to do this... This service dog will give her the opportunity to enjoy a park without the fear of a deadly reaction lurking on a slide from the hand print of a child that just ate peanut butter and jelly. This service dog will make trick or treating possible and far more enjoyable for that matter. Together, we can make this happen. Just one donation at a time.??Thank you so much for reading our story. If money is not something you can contribute right now, please pray for her safety and for our success in this service allergy dog journey.??Some of you would feel more comfortable donating a check in Emmalee's name rather than via computer. We have an account set up for her as well. In her own name, a savings account to save every penny we can. Thank you so much to those of you working on fundraiser ideas as well as those who have mailed donations. Emmalee may be too small to understand her allergy but she will grow up knowing a village of people came together to give her the life she deserves!?We've included a link in this story if you'd like to learn more about Emmalee and be a part of this journey: http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gofundme.com%2Fpawsforp...
