Retired Review employee succumbs to cancer

Retired Richmond Review employee Gertrude ?Trudi? Schouten (Carlin) passed away at the age of 71 following a brief battle with cancer on Aug. 29.

Trudi headed up the Review?s creative services department from 1999 to 2005, and also served as the shop steward for the department.

She also previously worked at the Review?s sister paper, the Westender (WE) of Black Press, and in her role as shop steward helped negotiate for her fellow union members.

Trudi was predeceased by her granddaughter, Alicia Hysop, and is survived by her two sons Patrick Hysop and Jason Lyne, her granddaughter Aleesha Hewitt and her two sisters, Ida and Christine.

A celebration of life is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. at the Prestige Harbourfront Resort, 251 Harbourfront Dr. NE, in Salmon Arm, B.C.

In lieu of flowers, Trudi?s family is requesting that a donation be made in her name to the B.C. Cancer Foundation.

Jason Lyne said his mother will be sadly missed and always remembered for her home-baked Nanaimo bars, canned pickles, and crib lessons.

She will also be remembered as a beloved mother who spent her career in the newspaper industry, who was both knowledgeable and well-respected.

Born in Chase, B.C., Trudi loved to read, crochet, and play golf, particularly with her two sons.

Pat and Jason will be riding in the Ride to Conquer Cancer 2014 in her honour.
